    Caninet Customer E-mail Policy

Fraudulent e-mails, claiming to be from @caninet.com or @mail.caninet.com, have recently been sent to our customers. In a practice commonly known as "phishing", some e-mails asked customers to supply credit card or banking information. These e-mails may also have contained virus-infected files. Because Caninet communicates with customers through e-mail regularly, we have rules about requesting personal information as well as including it in attachments. As a Caninet customer, it is important that you're aware of the types of information our e-mails might contain so you can recognize fraudulent messages.

    Our e-mails may include:

    • Links to pages related to your Caninet services.
    • Notification of changes to your service as well as virus or security alerts. We'll always link you to www.caninet.com or www1.caninet.com for more information.
    • Marketing and promotional offers, including contests.
    • Customer surveys or a link to a customer survey site.
    • A request for permission to send you information on Caninet products and services and those of its third party business partners. For more information on third party partners, see our privacy policy.

    Our e-mails will not include:

    • Requests for personal information such as passwords, PIN numbers, banking or credit card information unless in response to an initial e-mail inquiry from you.
    • Direct links to virus removal tools. Instead, we will direct you to www.trendmicro.com for detailed instructions on how to remove a virus.
    • Executable (.exe) file attachments, such as word documents or zip (.zip) files.
    • If you receive an e-mail communication from Caninet that does not conform to the above rules, do not respond to it. Contact us to report the e-mail.

We're committed to protecting your online safety. We will take the necessary steps to block fraudulent messages and pursue legal action where possible.

    Phishing: Fraudulent E-mail Messages

    What is Phishing?

"Phishing" - also called "carding" - is a general term for the use of fraudulent e-mail messages and Web sites designed to deceive Internet users into disclosing their bank and financial account information or other personal data such as usernames and passwords. The "phishers" then take that information and use it for criminal purposes, such as identity theft and fraud. The messages and Web sites used by phishers are designed to look like e-mails and Web sites of well known legitimate businesses, financial institutions, and government agencies, often using the familiar logos of these organizations and imitating the look and feel of the real Web sites and e-mail communications of these organizations.

    How Does Phishing Work?

In a typical phishing scam, the phisher sends an e-mail to a consumer stating that the consumer needs to update or validate their billing information to keep their accounts active. The e-mail either requests an e-mail response or directs the consumer to a look-alike Web site of the legitimate business, further tricking consumers into thinking they are responding to a real request. Unknowingly, consumers may submit their financial information to the scammers, who use it to order goods and services and obtain credit.

    How Can You Avoid Phishers?

To avoid getting caught by one of these scams, Internet users should keep in mind the following:

    • Be aware of the customer communication policies of the companies with which you do business. Know what types of messages they will send and what information, if any, they will request via e-mail. See the Caninet Customer E-mail Policy.
    • Be wary of any e-mail with urgent requests for personal financial information
    • If you are suspicious about its origin, don't use the links in an e-mail to get to any Web page - instead, contact the apparent sender using channels you know to be authentic - telephone, e-mail or Web site
    • Avoid filling out forms in e-mail messages that ask for personal financial information
